Editing/Copy Editing/Proofreading
Editing, copy-editing, and proofreading services tend to overlap to some extent. Whereas editing is typically performed at the start of a project (before desktop publishing), and copy editing and proofreading toward the end (after desktop publishing), each involves examining a document for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors as well as fact checking. Copy editing and proofreading additionally check for formatting and style issues (headings and subheadings, font size, line spacing, etc.).
Before the Book specializes in attention to detail and the ability to point out “fatal flaws” (if they exist) so the author is not embarrassed by inconsistencies or errors.
Examples of fatal flaws include

Text description of a figure or table that does not match the actual figure or table text.
  Missing figures, tables, or references.
  Improper pagination.
Column totals that do not add up correctly.
Inconsistent information that appears within the document (e.g., “1960” appears in one chapter and “1968” appears for the same event in another chapter).
Any errors that would embarrass the author.

Before the Book offers the following levels of editing and proofreading services:

Light-to-Moderate Edit: The document is edited for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation as well as factual accuracy. Potential fatal flaws are corrected or queried, as necessary. Edits can be made on a hard copy or in an electronic file with redlines that can be either accepted or rejected. A light-to-moderate edit preserves the author’s voice—the edited document will still read as if the author (not the editor) wrote it. Average editing rate: 5–10 pph (pages per hour).
Word-for-Word Proof: The document is compared to the original, word for word. Changes are marked on a hard copy or made directly in the electronic file with redlines. Average proofreading rate: 10–20 pph.
Read-Through Proof/Copy Edit: This is a higher level of proof wherein the document is read through for sense and accuracy as well as formatting and style issues. This proof is usually performed after a document has been edited and composed in a desktop publishing format. An important goal at this level of proof is to catch any “fatal flaws.” Changes are made with redlines directly in an electronic file or on a hard copy. Average proofreading rate: 8–15 pph.
